[Nine Clinic] Why We Introduced GentleMax Pro Plus Hair Removal in Hongdae: The Straight Story

you’re probably well aware of how many hair removal devices are on the market these days, and how different each one is.

I’m sure some of you have also tried hair removal and felt it didn’t work.

We went through our own share of trial and error,

Let me start with the conclusion.

The reason laser hair removal didn’t work at Hongdae dermatology clinics

isn’t because of the hair itself,

but because the laser didn’t reach that deep.

Have you been disappointed after a hair removal treatment?

“It keeps growing back no matter how many times I go.”

“They said it barely hurts, but it hurt and the results were minimal.”

Reactions like these mostly don’t come from extreme individual differences,

but from the device’s wavelength and power not being matched to the hair and skin.

Laser hair removal isn’t simply a treatment that “burns” hair.

The goal is to “destroy” the hair follicles while they are in the growth phase so they can never grow back,

and to achieve that, three things need to be in place at the same time.

1. The laser must reach the exact depth of the hair

2. It must be delivered at sufficient intensity

3. The skin surface must be able to withstand that energy

Looking at people who didn’t see results,

▸ they had coarse beard hair treated with a device calibrated for thin peach fuzz,

▸ the power was lowered to avoid skin irritation,

▸ or the cooling was too weak, so pain kept the energy from being applied strongly enough.

When these situations keep repeating,

the laser ends up never reaching the root of the hair

and only grazes the surface.

In other words, the hair is still alive.

It looks suppressed for a while,

then starts growing back a few weeks later.

This tends to happen especially

▸ in areas with deep, thick follicles, like the chin or the area above the upper lip (philtrum)

▸ in people with darker skin tones

▸ and in areas that are sensitive to hair removal, such as the Brazilian area.

If the laser doesn’t penetrate deep enough,

or if the intensity has to be lowered because the skin can’t tolerate it,

these areas may never even show a response to begin with 🥲

To be honest…!

I didn’t decide right away, from the very beginning, that “We’re definitely bringing in GentleMax Pro.”

Since every machine has its own strengths,

we went through a lot of comparisons.

A cooling gas at around -20°C is sprayed onto the skin before treatment,

but that’s not the case.

Since hair removal only responds to hair in the growth phase,

it naturally needs to be repeated several times
